Preserving a Lifetime of Discovery

For more than seventy years, Albert J. McCracken devoted himself to discovering, preserving, and documenting the history of Western North Carolina. Beginning as a young boy exploring the fields of the family farm in Haywood County, he assembled one of the region's most significant private collections of Native American artifacts, pioneer relics, antiques, and historical treasures.

In 1975, Albert made the extraordinary decision to donate over 3,000 artifacts to what is now Western Carolina University's Mountain Heritage Center, ensuring that future generations could learn from and enjoy the collection. Today, his legacy continues through the Albert J. McCracken Collection and through the descendants who remain committed to preserving both the artifacts and the stories behind them.
